BaseBrawl 2017: Yankees-Tigers Fisticuffs Recap
If you happened to somehow miss it yesterday, the Tigers played in their most exciting game of the 2017 season. The reason it got so lit can be seen below. Roll the tape(s).
Austin Romine and Miguel Cabrera get into a fight at home plate and it escalates into a benches-clearing brawl.

Here’s the spark notes how we got here:
- Gary Sanchez smacks a homerun for the Yankees in the fourth
- Fulmer hits Gary Sanchez in the leg with a 96 MPH fastball in the 5th.
- Fulmer claims he did it on accident, Yankees manager and former grown man wearing braces, Joe Giradi, said Fulmer absolutely hit him on purpose
- Fulmer claims he did it on accident, Yankees manager and former grown man wearing braces, Joe Giradi, said Fulmer absolutely hit him on purpose
- Later in the 5th, with the Tigers up to bat, Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnle throws BEHIND Miguel Cabrera
- From here I will take the write up from nj.com about what happened next:
Right away, plate umpire Carlos Torres waved his arm signaling Kahnle was ejected, and that led to an immediate objection by Yankees catcher Austin Romine because the teams hadn’t been warned following Sanchez’s hit by pitch.
“They want to defend Gary Sanchez, so I was good with that,” Cabrera said. “When (Romine) started arguing with the umpire, I say to Romine, ‘Calm down.’ And he said, ‘I’m not (bleeping) talking to you.’ I said, ‘Oh. Wow.’ And he tried to act like he’s tough.”
The stage was set for tempers to be completely lost.
- Champman comes in to relieve for the Yankees, and just when Miggy is about to step up to the plate, we get our fireworks.

Again, back to nj.com:
Here’s Cabrera’s story on how this escalated:
“So when I go back to home plate, I said, ‘You have any (bleeping) problem with me?’ And (Romine) said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because I tried to calm this down and you tried to act tough.’ And (Romine) took off his mask like he wants to fight, so … that’s it.”
Here’s Austin Romine’s version:
“(Cabrera) said, ‘You have a problem with me?’ I said, ‘This isn’t about you.’ And then he pushed me. I felt like he wanted a confrontation there.”
No matter, Romine received a two-handed shove to the chest right after he took off his mask, then Cabrera threw two punches, first a left and then a right.
“He didn’t land one of them,” Romine said. “Whatever it looked like, you can see me now (without a bruise). I was fortunate enough to be missed on both of them.”
Before Cabrera had a chance to wind up again, he was tackled to the ground by Romine, which led to the dugouts and bullpens emptying for the first time.
Some of the main swingers in the brawl were Miggy, Nick Castellanos, and Ian Kinsler, with Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine throwing haymakers on the other side. But during this donnybrook you will be able to see 67-year-old overpaid pile of shit Victor Martinez giving Gary Sanchez a handjob when it was winding down. Which lead to…

Now, if anyone saw the Champagne Instagram story yesterday, this was the part I was most mad about. I’m 220% with Nicky C and JV here. I don’t care that the Tigers are 73 games under .500 and 208 games back of a playoff spot. When your team is in battle, you go to war with them. Now look, I’m not mad that Victor didn’t light a pitchfork on fire and go charging into the eye of the hurricane, but don’t buddy up with someone who was just throwing roundhouses at your own fucking teammates.
Gary Sanchez is an all-star and an integral part of the Yankees success now and going forward and this is what he had to say about participating in the fight:
