Masters Preview: Hovland Wins in a Sudden Death Playoff

Probably not — but a guy can dream, right?

While I sit here watching the Par 3 Contest and scrolling through betting odds, I’m already daydreaming about the perfect Sunday afternoon. Balls in the water at 12 and 15, ending Bryson’s shot at a comeback. Scottie birdies four in a row on the back nine to post the low round in the clubhouse. Viktor Hovland surrenders a three-shot lead to Rory, only for Rory to miss a five-foot birdie putt for the win. Give me a playoff…

We haven’t seen a playoff at the Masters since 2017, when Sergio bested Justin Rose in an otherwise dull Sunday finish. Before that, it was 2013 — Adam Scott in the rain over Ángel Cabrera (who, by the way, is making his first return to Augusta since 2019 after a stint in a Brazilian jail). In 2012, Bubba Watson beat Louis Oosthuizen in extra holes after a miracle shot on 13 and four straight birdies. And who could forget 2005, when Tiger beat Chris DiMarco in a playoff? You know the shot — the chip on 16 that didn’t go in… until it did.

My only pick for the week? Will there be a playoff? Yes, at +400. I feel like we’re overdue, and that number is just staring me in the face. But I want more. Three-player playoff at +1200? Go ahead and give me that one too.
