Is Brad Holmes Asleep at the Wheel?
This article is presented by Antonio’s Italian Cucina
Brad has done nothing to lead us astray, but when do we begin to worry about the lack of offseason moves?
The last thing I want to be writing about is Brad Holmes having overlooked clear holes in this roster. But here we are. It’s mid-way through March, and I can confidently point to three different roster spots, at least, that would be below league average. When your Super Bowl window is open, you don’t allow any roster spot to be league average, let alone below.
So the question has to be asked (even though no one wants to ask it). Is Holmes and company asleep at the wheel? Or is it more of an our guys or a pride thing?
Let’s rewind to the beginning of last season. Holmes and company addressed two major holes by signing Marcus Davenport and Kevin Zeitler. Pretty much everyone had the same opinions on both guys. Zeitler is older, but should be a great addition. And as for Davenport, everyone agreed he was an okay talent, but his injury history was that of nightmares. So even if he bucked his career injury trends, that was only slightly better pressure help for Aiden.
Well, it turns out we were right with both. Zeitler was great on a great line, and Davenport barely played due to a season ending injury. If only someone could have seen that coming!!
Now, here we are. One year later, and we’ve lost Zeitler to free agency…

…and brought Davenport back for another prove it year.

Just how many prove it years do guys get? The market was strangely pretty well aligned with what Detroit needed, too. Sure Myles Garrett was never leaving Cleveland after they paid him what they did. But you still had a number of guys available. Josh Sweat, Azeez Ojulari, Joey Bosa, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Poona Ford just to name a small few. And that’s only on the defensive line side.
“Well, good franchises don’t go out and spend in FA. They built through the draft”. To that I’d say, it seems to me like the Eagles definitely got better. And we haven’t won shit yet, we don’t get to put ourselves in the same category as them, or the Chiefs.
Of course we’ll automatically be better cause Hutch will be back, that’s fair, to a degree. But do you remember us begging for more help alongside Hutch? One man can only do so much.
Again, Brad Holmes continues to prove us wrong. Taking Gibbs over Jalen Carter (even though Carter is a dawg). Investing in a lower value position of linebacker with Jack Campbell. I get it, he’s very good at what he does and we’re just schmucks watching from our couch. And the DJ Reed signing is great. By all accounts, he’s slightly better than Carlton Davis, and now on a better contract than CD. So credit where credit is due but dammit I feel like he’s leaving a lot to be desired in our Super Bowl window.
Hopefully I’m wrong. There’s still time to make moves. Trey Hendrickson can still be had…..
