Let’s settle this debate once and for all. When is the correct time to celebrate holidays falling on a weekday?
St. Patrick’s Day is barreling towards us, and with it comes an age old debate. When is the appropriate day to celebrate, if it falls during the week?
St. Patrick’s Day is sacred to a number of people. Are you of Irish descent? You celebrate. Are you a lover of Ireland and their culture? You celebrate. Are you 20-30 years of age and enjoy drinking copious amounts of green beer in weather that is slowly becoming enjoyable? You celebrate. Arguably one of the best celebrating holidays, St. Patty’s day has something for everyone.
Once in a blue moon, holidays such as this one will fall perfectly on a Friday or Saturday. Everyone knows what to do in these situations. Go out, have a few green beers (or 20), and enjoy the weather. But what if it isn’t that straight forward? What if said holiday falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday? When do we celebrate in those situations?
Option one, you could get your group together and celebrate the weekend before. You are fully in the holiday spirit, and can celebrate to the fullest extent. Option one allows you to double dip then on the actual holiday later that week for something smaller. Maybe some patio happy hour drinks for instance.
Conversely, the weekend after can also be used to celebrate. The holiday is still very much in the air, albeit a bit late, and you can close out the holiday with a bang. Obviously the actual St. Patty’s Day earlier in the week could be used as a lowkey primer. Doesn’t sound too bad either if you ask me!
And if you’re in college, let’s be honest, you’re doing Jägerbombs at 6am on both weekends… and then some.
Both options have true merit. This situation could be applied to pretty much anything; Birthdays, Halloween, Fourth of July, etc. So I ask you, what’s the right answer?
I personally fall on the side of the weekend before. Once the holiday comes and goes during the week, the holiday “feel” has passed and it’s not the same. But I know others disagree based on the actual holiday day during the week. Who’s to say what the right answer is.
What I do know, however, is that the weekend before the weekend before (i.e two weeks before the holiday) is just absolutely the wrong answer, looking at you Royal Oak St. Practice Day Bar Crawl.
Whatever you and your friends and family choose, enjoy responsibly.
