Montgomery Over Williams Was the Correct Move
Moment of silence for our departed soldier, Swag Kazekage (Jamaal Williams). Let’s take a walk thought the quick series of events that led to his departure.
Early Tuesday morning, reports emerged that Jamaal Williams and the Lions were ‘far apart’ in contract negotiations.
Then later that very same day, this news broke.
The Lions had signed former Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery to a 3-year deal worth 18 million, 11 of that guaranteed.
Then Wednesday evening the other shoe dropped.
Jamaal signed with New Orleans to the tune of 3-years, 12-million, 8 guaranteed.
Now, what was shocking about this whole stream of events was that it was believed the reason Detroit and Jamaal were so ‘far apart’ in negotiations was because Jamaal was asking for too big of a number, which obviously was not the case since he signed for less than Montgomery did.
To me, this speaks volumes about what Detroit’s plans were with Jamaal all along… which was essentially they were more than prepared to let him walk.
This might be unsettling to the Jamaal faithful out there but there really is no other explanation. If Holmes and Co would have offered Williams the exact same contract they just handed Montgomery, he would have jumped all over it. It sounds like if Detroit would have even matched the deal he is currently getting in New Orleans, he would have stayed a Lion.
But clearly, none of that happened. Detroit’s interest had to be extremely low. This suggests to me that maybe his antics that were so belovingly portrayed by the media may not have actually translated to leadership in the locker room. Maybe his style and personality were not as delightful of a fit as Twitter and the local news made it seem. No matter the case, Detroit’s brain trust decided Williams was not a part of the future.
To Jamaal loyalists, my heart goes out to you. The guy played with passion, scored a million touchdowns, and was one of the most entertaining personalities of the Lions’ most exciting season in years. Truly, take a moment, process your feelings, but then move on. I am telling you right now this was the right move and Montgomery is an upgrade at the RB position. He’s the freakin’ Frankenstein of running backs!
And if Detroit’s building this thing around the motto GRIT, you’re going to want to read about David’s personal life, because it’s the definition of it.
