Seattle Kraken Won’t Interfere With Any Octopus-Based Traditions Detroit Already Has

If you haven’t heard, Seattle, the 32nd team to enter the NHL has officially settled on a team name and branding for their organization- The Seattle Kraken.

Now, the Red Wings are trending on twitter with this announcement and a lot of fans seem panicked that this new eight legged nickname decision is going to infringe on the Wings long storied history of using an octopus as our mascot, hurling them onto the ice, and what the internet seems most concerned about- the emoji usage 🐙.

I’m here to quell all worries in regards to this. I am going to give Seattle and their new fanbase the benefit of the doubt and say their marketing team thought of Detroit when they put all this together. They know the most successful American hockey franchise in the NHL’s history owns the Octopus. And that his name is Al. And nothing they did seemed to even come close to touching the branding or imagery Detroit uses.

Nothing they have tweeted said or done has featured the octopus emoji, or even over-use of octopus imagery. The Kraken is a mythological beast that lurks in the shadows, the true look and identity of it is mysterious, and I think they did an awesome job with that sentiment in their launch video.

If anything, they will use the squid emoji 🦑.

As far as tossin’ pus on the ice- they won’t do it. Out west they have a stronger appreciation for nature and seem to have a greener approach to life’s creatures than say the midwest, where we have been hurling dead octopus carcasses on the ice since 1952. When LCA was built PETA sent over a letter asking us not to toss these already dead animals on the ice and I, along with the rest of Hockeytown, disrespectfully denied their request.

I’m going to give Seattle fans credit too, I don’t think they lack this much respect or creativity. Pair that with their love the pacific northwest and I don’t see them huckin’ pus.

Now, if I’m wrong I’ll be super pissed off and call them out on their shit….but until the first pus hits the ice, or pus comes to shove, I’m putting my faith in them.

Have no fear, we’ve been here since 1926 and they’ve been around for half-a-day. Let’s take in the excitement of a new expansion team and laugh at their roller hockey jerseys while respectfully nodding at the creativity in their name choice. We have too much history and too established of a tradition for them to even come close to infringing on us, and if they do, we’ll body baggem.
